My new Intel x-25 SSD drive

I woke up earlier this week to a Lenovo Thinkpad application I wasn’t even aware of that ran and does diagnostic tests periodically to my T61 laptop…the results were not good: S.M.A.R.T. was reporting an error and impending failure of my drive.  Now I live on my laptop and I knew this day would come [...]

VMware Thinapp Buildcache

If you’ve spent any time building large Thinapp packages then perhaps you’ve run into the problem of running out of hard drive space on the C: partition.  For me it was when I was trying to build an Office 2007 SP2 package on Windows XP SP3 and the template I used had only 8GB of [...]

Microsoft Active Directory vs. Novell eDirectory

As I mentioned in my last post, we are at the TCEA conference in Austin, Texas and are having amazing success showing how our Active Directory update and self-service password reset tool can really help School Districts and their IT admins save enormous amounts of time and energy. What I was not ready for was the number [...]

If you are the proud subscriber to MSDN and you’re wondering where your Terminal Server or Remote Desktop Services CALs are, then this article is for you.  I’m personally very big on the Desktop Virtualization movement, of which Remote Desktop Services (RDS) / Terminal Services (TS) plays a part.  At Web Active Directory I’m just [...]

Windows 2008 licensing guide

I know, it’s tragic you need 39 pages to explain licensing for an operating system, but at least now you can’t claim you couldn’t find the information.  Here’s the licensing guide from the Microsoft Download Center. Windows Server 2008 Licensing

Solid color as desktop background slows logon

When the background is set to a solid color the Welcome screen may be displayed for 30 seconds during the logon process…. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977346 Wow, neat bug huh?  I know I have personally seen a Windows 7 box that is experiencing this…and I always wondered why it was so slow to logon.  Well, I best go [...]

Windows 2000 EOL coming very soon

Just another reminder…. if you still have Windows 2000 in your environment you need to get it out NOW, pretty soon you won’t be able to call Microsoft about anything related to Windows 2000.  At Web Active Directory LLC we have already discontinued support for Windows 2000 for our products…so isn’t that reason enough? http://blogs.technet.com/windowsserver/archive/2010/01/14/windows-2000-server-approaching-end-of-life.aspx

Don’t run DNS as a virtual machine

OK, so I’m not saying not to run DNS as a virtual machine, just don’t run the DNS server for your VMware ESX cluster as a virtual machine on that cluster.  Without DNS most/many components of VMware ESX clusters can not work…and then you have a chicken and egg problem.  So if you’re going to [...]

Reverse DNS in IIS logs

This change makes troubleshooting IIS problems so much easier in an enterprise environment.  Now instead of doing this manually or looking thru the jibberish that is in the IIS logs you can simply search for the computer name of the user that is having the issue and see error/success and pages they are viewing/posting.  Of [...]
